Jack et ses deux enfants, le petit Tyler, et Mikki, l’adolescente énervée, viennent passer les vacances d’été dans une maison de plage qui a appartenu à leur mère, Lizzie, morte cette année. Ils sont accueillis par le père et la mère de Lizzie. Mais la mort de cette dernière a bouleversé tout le monde et les relations sont très tendues. Le fantôme de Lizzie va rendre régulièrement visite à Jack pour guider son chemin vers sa nouvelle vie et celle de ses enfants.
