Ruth et Alex Carver, un couple de retraités new-yorkais, se décident à vendre leur appartement du quartier d’East Village dans lequel ils habitent depuis près de quarante ans. Ils s’apprêtent à recevoir, le temps d’un week-end, des acheteurs potentiels, lorsque la ville de New York est mise en état d’alerte : un camion transportant du carburant est bloqué dans le tunnel de Midtown et son chauffeur a pris la fuite.
