Au surpeuplement dans les prisons, un haut fonctionnaire pense avoir trouvé la solution : créer la prison à domicile. Il s'agit de placer, chez des couples soigneusement selectionnés, des pensionnaires tout aussi bien choisis. Mais à la suite d'un quiproquo administratif, Jules et Norma Klarsh, couple sans enfants, proche de la cinquantaine, accueillent à la place d'un jeune prisonnier inoffensif un truand de grande envergure. Du prisonnier, de la famille d'accueil ou des habitants du village, le plus dangereux n'est pas celui qu'on croit.
