En juin 1945, Lene Winter aide son amie Nelly Lenz à revenir à la vie. Nelly a perdu toute sa famille dans les camps. Défigurée, elle subit une opération de chirurgie réparatrice qui lui donne un nouveau visage, sensiblement différent. Toujours amoureuse de son mari Johnny, un pianiste, cette ancienne chanteuse part à sa recherche et le retrouve dans un cabaret berlinois. Il lui propose un étrange marché : Nelly, qui se fait appeler Esther, doit se faire passer pour la défunte. Il pourra ainsi récupérer son héritage.
