Sebastian Zöllner, jeune critique d’art ambitieux mais fauché (Daniel Brühl), décide de se faire un nom en rédigeant la première biographie du peintre Manuel Kaminski, retombé dans l’anonymat après avoir conquis une célébrité mondiale. Aveugle, malade et misanthrope, l’artiste vit retiré depuis plusieurs années dans un village montagnard, en Bavière. Persuadé que Kaminski n’en a plus pour très longtemps, Zöllner espère faire coïncider la publication de l’ouvrage avec l’annonce de son décès.
