Rick Carlson, sauveteur de 32 ans sur une plage du sud de la Californie doit faire un choix entre renoncer à sa vocation ou accepter un emploi dit plus sérieux. Lors d'une réunion d'anciens lycéens il retrouve son ancienne petite amie, Cathy, qui est maintenant la mère divorcée d'un jeune garçon. Ils reprennent leur relation passée et Cathy encourage vivement Rick à accepter un poste de vendeur de voiture chez Porsche, qui lui a été proposé par un autre camarade de lycée. En pleine réflexion sur son avenir, Rick doit aussi s'occuper de Wendy, une adolescente solitaire qui a le béguin pour lui.
