Avant de partir pour la guerre, en 1918, Jean Herbillon, jeune aspirant, savoure ses dernières heures de liberté dans les bras d'une femme mariée, dont il devient l'amant. Au front, il fait la connaissance de Maury, un aviateur, et se lie d'amitié avec lui, sans imaginer un instant que celui-ci est le mari de sa maîtresse. Herbillon trouve la mort au combat.
