Toujours accompagné d'Ambroise, entraîneur et protecteur, Max est confronté au plus condescendant des champions du moment, Lord Staunton, au cours d'une rencontre machiavélique organisée par la Marquise de Theux. Cette passionnée du jeu d'échecs donnera sa fille, la ravissante Anne-Lise, au vainqueur du tournoi.
