Ethan Hawke joue le rôle de Paul, un vagabond solitaire qui arrive dans le petit village de Denton au Texas, communément appelé la vallée de la violence par la population locale. Alors que la tensión monte entre Paul et Gilly, un inévitable acte de violence déclenche une désastreuse réaction en chaîne, plongeant le village dans une sanglante situation de vengeance. Seul le shérif, las du monde, essaie de mettre fn à cette hystérie violente, mais après une atroce découverte sur le passé de Paul, il est impossible d’arrêter cette escalade de violence.
