Tout va pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes jusqu’au jour où, à la suite du décès d’un cousin éloigné, il hérite d’un somptueux manoir qui nécessite d’importants travaux. Il se voit déjà gentleman-farmer et père de famille, gagnant ainsi l’estime de ses parents d’origine modeste pour son éclatante réussite. Il va vite déchanter. Car la marche est trop haute. Incapable d’assumer son nouveau statut, il ne parvient jamais à trouver la bonne distance vis-à-vis de ses ouvriers. Patron inexpérimenté et coupable, il passe du laxisme à la paranoïa.
