Max et Steven sont jumeaux. Ils ont 3 ans lorsque leurs parents trouvent la mort dans un accident de voiture. Après ce drame, ils sont recueillis par leur oncle Len et sa femme Ruth. Leur destin ne tarde pas à diverger : Steven, qui a la santé fragile, est confié à l'Assistance publique. Un jour, il disparaît sans laisser de traces. Quand il refait surface, des années plus tard, c'est pour assassiner son oncle et sa tante, coupables, à ses yeux, de l'avoir abandonné. Et ce n'est qu'un début puisqu'il a l'intention de s'immiscer dans la vie de Max et de prendre sa place, pour mener enfin cette douce existence dont on l'a privé...
