Jeff, un pompier gravement blessé à la jambe, ayant perdu son père dans un feu lorsqu’il était enfant, loue pendant son rétablissement une chambre au rez-de-chaussée d’un immeuble. Il y vivra avec Jenny, une veuve opératrice du centre d'appels de secours le 911, ayant deux enfants, Luke et Elsie.
