Graham travaille dans une importante agence de publicité où il occupe un poste de cadre qui ne lui convient plus. Sa vie bascule le jour où une promotion attendue depuis longtemps lui passe sous le nez. Sa femme, apprenant qu'il a raté le coche, devient insupportable à la maison. De méchante humeur, il bouscule un clochard sur les rails du métro. L'homme meurt, écrasé par une rame. Graham découvre ainsi qu'on peut tuer sans être inquiété. Il envisage alors de faire du meurtre un moyen de promotion sociale et décide de tuer tous les rivaux qui se dressent sur son chemin...
