Depuis la mort de sa femme, Arthur, un chirurgien singulier et sévère, cloître sa fille adolescente Lucille dans un étrange manoir. Désespérée, Lucille tente de se suicider et se retrouve avec le visage complètement brûlé et bandé. Arthur, avec l'aide de sa tante, prépare une étrange greffe de peau afin de redonner un visage à Lucille, un visage qui ressemble à sa femme bien-aimée et décédée. Pour s'occuper d'elle, le père engage alors Joan, une infirmière séduisante au passé sombre. Lucille et Joan entament une relation amoureuse interdite et passionnée.
