Milan, sous la neige. Une riche famille d'industriels lombards du textile s'apprête à fêter somptueusement l'anniversaire du patriarche, Edoardo Recchi. Celui-ci nomme deux héritiers pour gérer son empire : son fils, Tancredi et son petit-fils, Edoardo Jr. Tancredi est marié à Emma, d'origine russe.
